Asphodelaceae

Asphodelaceae or the Asphodel family was separated out of Liliaceae back in morphologic times. The phylogenetic studies leading to APG III place the family in the Order of Asperagales?, reducing the former definition to subfamily status under the name Asphodeloideae, and joining in the families of Xanthorrhoeoideae and Hemerocallidoideae. Plants in this family have fibrous, tuberous or rhizomatous roots. Most have fleshy leaves in a spiral or in two ranks, often with spiny margins. Some develop woody stems and grow into trees. Flowers bisexual with 6 tepals and stamens and a 3 chambered ovary. The fruit is a capsule; seeds are brown or greyish-black.

Asphodelaceae was declared nomen conservandum in 2017 and so supersedes the otherwise preferred, older name Xanthorrhoeaceae.
