Plumatichilos

Plumatichilos is a recently named (2001) genus in the Orchidaceae family. It represents the bearded group of Pterostylis. This segregation is not accepted by everyone so in the meantime we will have information in both places in the wiki. This genus is pollinated by male insects of the fungus gnat and mosquito families.

Plumatichilos tasmanicum(D.L.Jones) Szlach. syn. Pterostylis tasmanica D.L.Jones grows on heathland and healthy forest in well drained soils in New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The flower is about 2.5 cm. long with the upper hooded part translucent with a netted pattern of dark green lines. It has yellow hairs on the lip. Photos taken by Bob Rutemoeller and Mary Sue Ittner October 2007 near Apollo Bay where it was growing in heathland. There is some question about the spelling of this species. We have it listed as it is in the Australian Orchid Name Index, but it is listed in the Kew monocot data base as Plumatichilos tasmanicus (D.L.Jones) Szlach as a synonym for Pterostylis tasmanica D.L.Jones.
