Nectaroscordum

Nectaroscordum is a small genus of 3-4 species from Central Asia, traditionally it is considered allied to the genus Allium in the former family Alliaceae (now included in Amaryllidaceae). Using traditional morphological characters, species in this genus are considered distinct. However, the recent power of DNA molecular phylogenetics clearly shows that this genus belong to Allium (Friesen et al. 2006). It was circumscribed as Allium, Subgenus Nectaroscordum. Morphologically, pedicels that are enlarged into a disk-like structure at the base of each flower. The ovary is half-inferior, e.g. it is sunken into base of the tepals, into the disk-like structure. The few species of Nectaroscordum are attractive and worthy of cultivation.
