Tapeinochilos

Tapeinochilos is a genus in the family Costaceae. It is often misspelled as "Tapeinochilus". There are 16 species which are native to Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Australia and the Solomon Islands. Plants do best in tropical conditions with plenty of moisture and rich soil.


Tapeinochilos ananassae is also known as the Indonesian Wax Ginger and is native from Malaysia to Queensland, Australia. It grows to about 8' (2.5 m) tall. Photos below were taken by Nhu Nguyen at the Lyon Arboretum, Hawai`i, USA.
