We get Cotton Rats here on the farm in NC. Live trap them using peanut
butter spiked with sunflower seeds and relocate at least 1000 feet away
from the house and greenhouse. They are cute little buggers. When we lived
in NYC, the varmints were Norway Rats and leftover pepperoni pizza was the
bait of choice... euthanized with engine starting fluid... AKA ether.
