The self-selection theory is possible as the original colony has been there 
for at least 80 years, probably left from a time when the site was properly 
cultivated, so there has been ample time for a certain degree of adaptation 
to become fixed. The bulbs are certainly no more than 5 cm (2 in) deep above 
broken limestone brash.
