I think Phil may be on target regarding the hypersensitivity to Boophone
pollen.

Pollen contains proteins and as we all know anyone can have a reaction
to any protein. The pollen functions as an antigen and triggers our
immune system to kick into action.

This can be anywhere from a runny nose to muscle aches to anaphlatic
shock that you see with people allergic to penicillin.
