In Britain they grow exra hardy clones, obtained from colder areas in the wild. 'Crowborough' is very well known.

 

Z. aethopica is a marsh plant in the mild original habitat of the Cape and goes dormant in summer. True that in a WARM climate they remain evergreen if kept on well watered.
