I suspect that these blank messages are NOT being sent as plain text. The mailing list software is probably configured to delete HTML and attachments, and the sender is unwittingly sending html-ized text with no corresponding plain text version. Either that, or the email client being used to send these empty messages is buggy. The latter is quite possible as it looks like she's using something called "Javamail". The sender should take the time to investigate the settings in her email client. She can test them by sending herself a message, btw.
