Patrick Synge in Collins Guide to Bulbs (early 1960S), attributed the name
to van Tubergen and uses the spelling "sulphur".

This hybrid group to which it belongs (× spofforthiae) is not mentioned in
the early twentieth century editions of the Bailey Cyclopedia, nor in Col.
Gray's Hardy Bulbs (late 1930s).

It would be nice to know when ‘Sulphur Queen’ was raised.

I think we should use the original spelling, whatever that is. I'll switch
to "sulphur".
