The late Ernie Lythgoe, a former doyen of our local rock garden club, used to
mix up his potting soils from the reddish mineral layer of soil under the usual
organic forest duff. He "sterilized" it by putting it in black plastic bags and
leaving these out in the sun. How long? I honestly don't remember, but at a
guess, a week or two in mid-summer.

What I do: I dump it on various beds. The various ingredients can only improve
the native soil, which is rather heavy and poorly drained.
