I get more air in my home made compost mix than in anything I can buy
except bark which is full of fresh wood splinters. I routinely use half
rotted leafmould for small pots containing some Fritallaria species, Arums,
Biarums, Galanthus, Muscari, and especially Crocus and reticulate Iris
which are happy in a high proportion of the leafmould whether under glass,
or in open frames with rainfall at random throughout the year. Corms drying
out before they have built new ones go dormant very quickly and die, this
compost prevents that problem.
However, It would kill many other bulbs. Most Crocus get at least 50%
leafmould when I pot them. The leaf mould is NOT fully rotted. It works in
my cool semi maritime climate
