Sorry to hear this as Santa Cruz is in an unique position (very acid soil) to grow rare and uncommon South African and Australian plants. I wonder if loal garden groups could not help with the weeding. I remember their Protea collection was fabulous, growing luxuriously in those favorable conditions. Is Brett Hall still there?
