Growing under lights

When I used a metal-halide light in the basement or an unheated room
during Midwestern winters, I set the timer to have the lights on at
night. That was when I was home to see my plants, and the light heated
the growing area during the coldest part of the day. I was lighting
cacti and succulents, which, if dry, take temperatures down to
freezing but not freezing.
