fussy plants

Anemone blanda is a lovely early flowering bulb that I formerly purchased, flats and bags of bulbs at a time, only to watch them fade away in the next couple of years. Then one year, seeds from a fast fading clump in a bed above a gravel walkway fell to the gravel and germinated. Now I have a patch of 5 or more Anemone blanda (blue flowered) plants in gravel.

Given the long wet winters, I suspect the gravel provides enough drainage, and keeps this flower, when dormant, from rotting.
