I also wondered whether by "submit" Clement meant "post" or "resign,
i.e. unsubscribe" (meaning associated with /soumettre /). Relying on
plausible shared meanings ("false friends") or online translation can be
difficult. It's especially hard to know what another language uses for
computer jargon, as I have found out when trying to get help at internet
shops in other countries. Not to mention "Where is the @?" on a
non-English keyboard. Or asking a staff person questions in a shared
third language neither of us knows too well.
I haven't even tried to find out where the @ is on the Georgian
keyboard, but I'm reliably assured that they use the Cyrillic alphabet
rather than their wonderful indigenous one, so I don't have to learn the
latter to read shop signs. Off to see the alpine bulbs in May ... but
shamelessly neglecting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study a
North Caucasian language. Still, it will be good to hear it, just as
it's good to step out onto a faraway hillside and be surrounded by the
fragrance of the place.
