Trading on pbs

PBSers,

I have been a member of PBS for years, even in its previous lives and been involved in many aspects of its life. Things are a bit slow right now, but I hope I can revive some interest in TRADING bulbs and seeds among its members.

PBS correctly discourages direct commerce (selling) on its pages, but I have enjoyed meeting people and exchanging plants without exchanging money.

I see an ocassional post that makes me prick up my ears and attention. It is easy to find the email of every one who posts to PBS and I can quietly send a direct email to the member. In approaching someone off site there is little or no pressure to react, but most people are glad to connect with fellow bulb growing success. I inquire if some bulb might be available for trade for something in my collection. More often than not we can reach an agreement.

By friendly negotiations each trader can find something they want and send bulbs by USPS. Each trader pays for their own postage and nothing for the bulb or plant being traded. We have agreed upon value. Trading has allowed me to obtain hard to find ‘collectible’ plants just for the cost of postage and I get to meet growers all over the country.

Over the years I have shared dozens of bulbs with many PBS members and this note is an encouragement for others to take the leap and ask. Keep requests simple and specific. When offering a trade be sure you have something of worth to offer. I have had people offer plants that any person could get at the local box store and I consider ‘junk’ or little trade value, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. And not all requests come to pass.

So consider this a reminder to share you growing success and ‘bulb hunger’ by looking for a good trade from other member growers. It is economic and fun.

Best wishes and good luck. Jim W.
