Crinums in Winter in Cooler Zones

I don't know about protection; both Crinum bulbispermum and x powellii were
perfectly hardy in the garden here for years. 
I finally gave them away because of their incessant demands for water (as
with crocosmia, eucomis, agapanthus, etc.) in summer.
