Crinums in Winter in Cooler Zones

Judy,

Here it all dies to the ground. I try to throw a pile of oak leaves on it, but don’t manage every year or every plant. I have maybe 20 crinum scattered around my 1 acre garden and some get no care or not every year, but these are mostly long established. The first winter in the ground I try to throw oak leaves and a blanket (non-woven garden cloth) over it. I only planted 1 new Crinum this year ( 'Pink Flamingo’) so this will get TLC in fall. I do NEED a nice White flowers with pink striped though.

I would suggest some winter protection at least the first winter. My huge ’Super Ellen’ and old X powellii ( at least 15 - 20 flowering scapes this year) get no protection at all. Too much work.

Hardier than you are thinking. Best Jim

To Jim Waddick and anyone else who want to chime in -

Our winters may be cold with snow. They can be cold with no snow. They might be moderate temperatures. What happens to the Crinum pseudostem in winter? Does it survive? Will it freeze to mush? Do I need to cover / protect it somehow?

Judy
