I have what is likely only one small plant from 2008 sowing of Silverhill seed. I am profoundly embarrassed to admit it tolerates the most shockingly awful care in a very hot summer climate, with days frequently over 113 F / 45C.

I probably read the description on the Silverhill Web site when I bought it, but certainly nothing since. I didn't take notes when they sprouted, so I don't know how many I once had. I now have what appears to be a single plant in the original 20 ounce / 560ml foam drinking cup, which is 3" / 7.5cm across and 6" deep. It is potted in a combination of fine sand and my local, decomposed-granite clayish soil.

I have left it outside throughout the year for the past many years, where it gets sun until just after mid-day. I have never been certain of when it is supposed to grow. I would begin watering regularly whenever it sprouted. It has always sprouted on its own in late summer, so I had thought it a winter grower. I have watered it as long as it stayed in leaf, which was often all winter. I might note that some frost occurs 0-10 nights per winter here. In spring it would dry up when I forgot to water it, and I would stop watering until it sprouted again. We have winter rain, as well as summer monsoon rain, so it received sporadic summer rain.

It sprouted last fall. This time I decided to keep it moist through spring and see when in spring or summer it would go dormant. It never did. On a few occasions after it got hot I forgot to water it, and leaves began dying back. I watered again and they grew some more. Recently the bulb has expanded to the point it has ruptured the foam cup.

I went to pza.sanbi.org and found the two papers on this plant from 2000. I went to our Wiki to read some more. Now I realize I should be watering it in summer, and leaving it dry all winter. Also I need to move it to a larger pot. Normally I would wait until dormancy, but is there a problem moving a small plant like this when in growth? I would not likely need to disturb the root ball at all; it will be a hard lump when I peel off the antiquated, ultraviolet-damaged old foam.

Is this plant self-fertile? How many others are growing it?
