Diana, I feel that your website is more than adequate and for me it's very
easy to navigate, determine cost and place an order. Any answers to price,
availability and shipping times are there on the site, you just have to
read. Technology has left a lot of people lazy...

For great, unusual plants I?ll happily deal with a non-professionally
designed website. I?m hot after the plants not the graphic design. So as
long as I can figure out how to pick the plant and pay for it I?m good.

As a complete novice with many South African bulbs, I asked Diana if she
could put together a nice starter collection of Lachenalias for a given sum,
and she was happy to accommodate.? She sent an excellent assortment and
detailed growing directions, and every one is doing well.? Most are
blooming.? All this has helped solidify my growing bulb fanaticism.

Yes, Amazon has a more advanced eCommerce platform, but all Amazon nurtures
is Amazon's bottom line.? There is no substitute for the small nursery and
the personal touch.

You go girl!

Bob? Zone 7 and waiting for the you-know-what to hit the fan tonight.

I couldn't agree more and I most certainly will do my part even though I

i think we can show our thanks to Diane and Robin by patronizing their
nurseries.

Even if it's only a bulb or two.

I heard a quote once about small specialist nurseries.

How do you make some money with a specialist nursery?

"Start with a lot of money"

If I may add my two cents:

Diana, I find your website good enough for what it is.

Being a bulb enthusiast myself and not from US, I took time to read through
the conditions (especially the international orders page).

I think your request about name and address is essential.

Please continue to offers these gems. There are hardly any place that offer
so many generas and species in one place.

Greetings from Berlin,

Vlad

I thank you all for the kind and positive comments.? I can't tell you
how much that means to me.

I don't mean to complain about customers asking questions, just silly
ones like 'how much is this bulb?'.? I try to answer all questions, and
give advice where necessary.? In these modern times, it is rare to be
able to communicate with a real person, only with the small specialty
nurseries will you get personalized care.?? That makes it special for me
too, I feel I know some of my customers.? People send me pictures of
their bulbs, or of their greenhouses or gardens, and that is really
wonderful, I feel I have friends all over the world.

Again, many thanks for your supportive comments.

long as I can figure out how to pick the plant and pay for it I?m good.

I agree the Telos website works well enough. I would much prefer a simple
website and excellent bulbs like Telos offers than some fancy site like
Zappos and ordinary or inferior bulbs. And I appreciate that it is Diana
who corresponds. I know how much effort goes into growing these bulbs from
seed so her nursery is a treasure.

I ordered several species I had not grown before last year and am having a
lot of fun watching them. This week my Tropaeolum azureum began blooming.
From a tuber the size of a garbanzo bean and a thin thread of a shoot, an
amazing canopy loaded with flower buds has scrambled all over the
pollinator exclusion net I built around it. In the attached photo I placed
a T. hookerianum bloom beside the T. azureum to show how much more blue the
latter has.

I usually grow from seed but I have not gotten this species seed to
germinate. I have several tiny pots this year, some still in the fridge,
and some taken out after various lengths of cooling. None have emerged yet.
Well this year I will have lots of seed, if I get out there with my paint
brush. I am waiting for a day less windy. The blooms which have escaped the
netting could be cross pollenated by T. hookerianum since it is a cloud of
purple only 10 m away and loaded with bees. The bees have not yet found the
T. azureum.

As Jim mentioned, it has been unusually dry and windy. Some bulb leaves
already have tips turning brown even though I have been carrying buckets of
saved rain water for what seems like hours each day. My barrels are below
half capacity now so it better rain again before summer.

As Diana at Telos comments, the customers are the reason we enjoy what we do
so much. The photos they send, the comments they make, even occasionally the
plants they send us, are what make the nursery business so worthwhile and
enjoyable. It's particularly rewarding to deal with the same customers year
after year.

Sure, there are a small minority with smartphone trigger finger, a modern
disease I think we're stuck with, but we learn as much from our customers as
they learn from us. I've worked for other nurseries, fortunately smaller
nurseries where we get to know our customers and can better meet their needs
and enjoyed those jobs a lot. Even a current wholesale customer is a joy to
work with as they make a strenuous effort to know their suppliers.

Best regards,

Robin @ Hansen Nursery

For years I produced my family's nursery catalog (remember paper catalogs),
and later also converted the catalog to html each year (long before online
shops). That was a giant yearly project...and I was 3000 miles away from
actual operations.

Sitting here, I glance over at my garden spreadsheet and shudder at the
thought of converting it to a presentable and useful online catalog...and
doing it in a way that it is maintainable and easily updated. Knowing that
whatever solution I choose, there will be many dozens of hours of work
before something workable results...time where I would be away from work,
the garden, and any other personal activities I might indulge in, time that
I wouldn't get back, nor compensated for.

It is really easy to understand the choice to keep legacy systems going
when the commitment to change is so expensive (time/labor/money)...and the
replacement never works perfectly for you, since it is alway a mass market
system with limited or expensive customization. We have three interlocking
systems at work, one an enormous spreadsheet that is manually updated, but
produces the reports needed, and easily workable, another commercial system
that does its job pretty well, mostly because of an inhouse software
wizard, and a standardized system that replaces a completely obsolete
system that had once been well customized...it does nothing well, is
ferociously difficult to use for everyone, but is what we are stuck with
since a previous administration wanted to get the resume entry for
"updating this obsolete system". No, they don't talk to each other, except
for a few limited digital reports that are sent occasionally. I will note
that you can get an answer out of the spreadsheet faster than you can get
either of the other systems started up.

Anyway. Kudos to the small independent nurseries that supply my plant
habits, so long as the websites have the basic information, I can do my due
diligence. If they add deeper descriptions and information, provide images,
and have a workable navigation interface, wow, that is a major plus!

Now, if you will excuse me, I _need_ to go pore over the Telos offerings.
I'm sure I'll find a "few" items I can't live without!

Iris histroides does better here in places where it gets little or no
summer water. It does well in full sun.
