Here is a photo of the first bloom on my Costus spectabilis plants. This
plant is a rhizomatous geophyte found in most of tropical Africa. The
flower is slightly fragrant. It loves the heat and humidity here in
tidewater Virginia, but it does not do well in full sun. It is winter
dormant here for six months where it stays inside the house and receives no
water. I will be moving them to much larger and deeper pots next year. I
will try to get them to set seed for a future BX. Enjoy! Bern
Williamsburg, VA Zone 7B (hot and humid)
