As Jane mentions, Laura Grant's highly developed method of protecting in-ground geophytes is in the current edition of *The Bulb Garden* which has just been mailed to members. If you don't receive it soon, please contact Arnold Trachtenberg. As for peonies, I grow mostly species and they have their quirks in pots. The most important thing I've learned is to keep potting up, not letting them grow too long in one pot, or as Jane has experienced you run into problems such as rotting roots.
