I was also privileged to know John Bleck since meeting him and his
then-wife Mary when they owned Abbey Garden nursery in Carpinteria. Both of
them were incredibly generous with their time and plants over many years.
At UCSB, the diverse teaching collections John developed opened my eyes to
plants of all kinds, in many plant families. I learned much of my sense of
what a plant collection is from John, as well as patience and generosity.
He will be very much missed by me and all his friends.
