Honeybee concerns

Please remember that honeybees are introduced to North and South America, and have done tremendous damage to native bee populations by outcompeting them. This will necessarily reduce the reproductive success of plants (like orchids) with specialized morphology adapted to specific native bees.

I care for some large ecological reserves in Ecuador that have large honeybee populations. I am going to set out lures with juvenile hormone or mild insecticides to try to eliminate them from our area. They do not belong here and are probably having a very large impact on the native vegetation over wide areas. I recognize their importance for human crops, but in natural areas in the Americas they should be eliminated for the good of the native vegetation.
