I'm a keen amateur gardener and breeder of miniature narcissi, which I grow in a mix of 2 parts John Innes No 2 compost/ 1 part peat free multipurpose compost/ 1 part fine grit (or sometimes 1/2 and 1/2 grit and vermiculite). The bulbs are potted into clay pots. A piece of plastic netting is placed over the hole, then a layer of compost, then the bulbs in a layer of sharp sand, then another layer of compost, and topped off with grit. The pots are plunged to their rims in a bed of sharp sand in an unheated alpine house. I live in York, North Yorkshire, England, where our temperatures can vary between -12 °C and 30 °C. My alpine house is shaded during the summer months for the benefit of its other inhabitants. The photos were taken with an Olympus C220 digital camera.
