PBS Members Affairs / Treasurers Notes
September 16, 2023, 04:01:47 PM
We've had a bit of a glitch with PayPal.

They stepped recording the BX or SX number when transmitting payments.

I would  ask everyone to add the number of payments in the note section.

I'm getting receipts with a designation of Item # 1 or item # 2.

It makes it difficult to credit the proper SX/BX number.

Thanks and looking forward to the growing season.

We have a new pest in town.  An introduced one form China purportedly  via a load of stones from China.

This one attacks most plants we grow.  Favorite is the weedy Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima

Images attached of the egg cases, first instar pest and newly developed trap that uses a pheromone lure to attract them into a container for disposal. I've seen them on Peonies, Grapes, apples, Pears and  Quince.

Images of a trap recently developed using a pheromone lure based on Methyl salicylate, wintergreen.

General Discussion / Spotted Lantern fly
May 23, 2023, 03:30:25 AM
A bit of background on insect pests.
Most are blind or have limited vision.
They generally find mates and food via scent using the antennae atop their heads.

The lures work by tricking them into thinking their approaching food or a mate.
It so happens that the chemical lure ( pheromone) for this particular pest is a common substance many folks may have in the bathroom medicine cabinet.
Methyl salicylate, or better known as wintergreen.
If you do purchase the lure you will smell wintergreen.
I purchased the pheromone lures from https://alphascents.com/collections/lures-1/products/spotted-lantern-fly

Traps came from https://www.greatlakesipm.com/monitoring/traps/great-lakes-ipm/glgl401101-spotted-lanternfly-slftrap-reusable-full-season-reservoir.

There's two different ones.  One has a removable jar to empty and replace.
The other is a plastic bag that doesn't allow for emptying and replacing.

General Discussion / Habranthus pedunculosus
January 14, 2023, 12:13:59 PM
A member living in Louisiana has written to me looking for Habranthus pedunculosus (syn. Habranthus juncifolius) which he obtained originally from Thad Howard years ago.  He lost most of his plants in a freeze and is looking to get another to produce some seed.

Anyone with this plant willing to share seeds or bulbs  please let me know.

PBS Members Affairs / Catch up time
October 19, 2022, 09:39:06 AM
Dear PBS Members

As many of you know we have increased the level of member services the last year to include many more BX and SX offerings.

Our two relatively new Board of director members, Jan and Bridget have done a great job and deserve much credit.

It's a thankless job at times but the rewards  are seen when hard to find seeds and bulbs land in our mail boxes.

I am writing to remind all of those who have enjoyed the distributions.

Please play catch up and pay those outstanding payments and at the same time you can renew your membership for 2023.

Due paid now will qualify for a full 2023 membership

This will avoid the need to send out all those post card reminders.

Hope the coming season is full of flowers for everyone.

If you aren't sure about past payments please write me at:

Arnold140@verizon.net
