Calathea

Calathea is a large rhizomatous genus in the Marantaceae family of about 300 species native to tropical America, mostly Brazil. Most species are very similar looking to Maranta and are grown more for their beautiful variegated leaves than for their flowers.


Calathea burle-marxii is native to Bahia State, Brazil. The photos below were taken by Jacob Uluwehi Knecht of plants grown in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Calathea picturata is native to Amazonas State, Brazil. The photos below were taken by Nhu Nguyen of plants growing at Wahiawā Botanic Garden, Hawai'i.
