This page contains information about Zephyranthes hybrids with names that start with E-L.
Zephyranthes 'El Cielo' (syn. Z. sp. El Cielo) was found in cloud forests in Mexico and may be a naturally occurring hybrid. It does well with more shade than most rain lilies. It's also unusual because it flowers for most of the growing season, although rarely heavily. Photos taken June 2004 by Jay Yourch & Alani Davis.
Zephyranthes 'El Cielo' × Z. 'Big Dude' is a hybrid volunteer found growing among self-sown seedlings of Z. 'El Cielo', near a large patch of Z. 'Big Dude'. It got the broader petals from the pollen parent and the exserted stigma and anthers, as well as the habit of closing its flowers at night, from the seed parent. Its foliage is wider and more frost tolerant than 'El Cielo' and it does not go through a mid-spring semi-dormancy as do most selections of Z. 'Labuffarosea'. Photos taken July 2007 by Jay Yourch.
Here are photos of its sister seedlings showing the variations in color and petal widths. Also see Z. 'Kathryn'.
Zephyranthes 'Fantasy Island' is a hybrid made by Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. It has white flowers with pink veining along the petal edges. Photos taken September 2007 by Jay Yourch.
Zephyranthes 'Grandjax' is a hybrid of Z. grandiflora × Z. 'Ajax' (Z. candida × Z. citrina) with light pink flowers. It flowers abundantly and offsets readily, but is sterile. Photos taken July 2004 by Jay Yourch & Alani Davis.
Zephyranthes 'Jakarta Jewel' is a hybrid made by Fadjar Marta of Indonesia with semi-double light pink flowers. Photos taken August 2007 by Jay Yourch.
Zephyranthes 'Kathryn' is a hybrid of Z. 'El Cielo' × Z. 'Big Dude' made by Jay Yourch and named after his daughter. In most characteristics it is intermediate between its seed and pollen parents. Like its sister seedlings, its foliage is wider and more frost tolerant than Z. 'El Cielo' and it does not go through a mid-spring semi-dormancy as do most selections of Z. 'Labuffarosea'. These photos were taken in the evening when the flower had begun to close, it opens flat in brighter light. Photos taken May 2009 by Jay Yourch.
Zephyranthes 'Krakatau' is a hybrid made by Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. The flowers are small, but colorful, having reddish orange petals and yellow centers. Photos taken August 2007 by Jay Yourch.
Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' (syn. Z. sp. 'Labuffarosa') was found and collected by Carl Schoenfeld (owner of Yucca Do Nursery) and John Fairey (owner of Peckerwood Garden) in the Sierra Chiquita in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The large flowers open in the afternoon and are variable from white to pink, also bicolors. Z. drummondii, Z. traubii and an unknown pink Z. species are found growing in the same area and Z. 'Labuffarosea' is suspected to be a natural hybrid of these species.
Zephyranthes 'Lydia Luckman' is a hybrid made by Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. The flowers are pink with a light stripe down the center of each petal. Photos taken September 2007 by Jay Yourch.
