I presume your paint brush has been hard at work trying to pollinate those flowers? If you succeed your seed exchange director would be happy to take the seed off your hands.  I'll bet they'd fetch a pretty penny for the society.

I'm closing the seed exchange for donations until February or March 2023.  I'd like a break for a bit and I need my dining room table back for the holidays!

So please save your seed until I reopen the exchange.

Thank you,

Jan

Seed exchange now closed for orders.
Seed Exchange 12 is now open for orders until 5pm PDT, November 6, 2022. Each paid up member may order 15 packets from the list below. If you wish to order more than 15 packets I will fill the amount over 15 packets after everyone's first choices are filled. I also reserve the right to stop filling really large orders at a reasonable point.  In other words before I go crazy!  Non-members may not order seed. Members in arrears for SX/BX may not order seed.  I check.   I will also be randomizing the orders for filling.  Any order submitted by the deadline has an equal chance of being filled first. All orders must be submitted to seedyjan1@gmail.com with "SX 12" in the subject line.
Most of the seed packets are now labeled alphabetically with name, item number and SX number.  Labeling is still a work in progress;  I get ghosting for some unknown reason and sometimes the subspecies and variety information doesn't print.   The labels do not include additional information such as color, parents etc.  You'll need to transfer that information from the list.  Donor information is also available from the list.  The list now includes the number of packets available and if seed is available to make additional packets.
A special note about the arisaemas.  Some of them may not be ripe until the end of November.  These noted with a quantity of -1.  You can still order them and I can either hold your order until I can add the arisaemas or send them separately for a separate postage charge.
Rules for ordering
Read them! Orders that do not comply will be filled last.
Your name, address, and email should be listed first on your order.  Give your address just like you would on an envelope. Don't string it across a line; I can't tell what goes on what line. This is particularly important for foreign addresses.
For example:
Sue Bulbcrazy
2654 Bulbnut Ln
Bulbnutsville, OR 92013
suebulbcrazy@ggmail.com
Seed is $2 per packet.  Limit 15 packets for first round. Your bill will reflect credits for any previous SX submissions.  Postage is $4.00 per envelope for domestic orders.  Foreign orders will be charged at cost.  You will receive a bill in your envelope which you can pay online at https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbsforum/index.php?page=membership Prompt payment is expected.
List your 15 first choices vertically in numeric order. For example:
13 Narcissus bulbocodium
14 Narcissus cantabricus
15 Romulea rosea
Unless you tell me differently I will assume you'll accept seed from a different donor if seed from your first choice donor is sold out.
List your alternates in numeric and alphabetical order.  You may star your first choice alternates.  You can also include notes to help me pull seeds that will make you happy.  For example; "any gladiolus seed ok as alternate".  If you don't list alternates I will only send the first choices I have available.
No seed orders from countries that require a phytosanitary certificate. I am willing to send to Great Britain if you agree to reimburse the Society for postage costs should the mail not reach you.  Your postal systems has strikes looming and seems less than stable at the moment hence this requirement.
Contact me with any questions about the SX procedure, but not about the offerings, at seedyjan1@gmail.com.  Questions about germination or the suitability of the seed for your climate should be posted on the forum.
The next post will be the list.  It was too big to post along with the instructions.

A note regarding the seeds listed as grown by me, Jan Jeddeloh.  They were actually grown by Jim Barton who keeps the US seed exchange well supplied with seeds of these California natives. He is very generous with his seed.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / SX 481 now closed
August 25, 2022, 12:56:56 PM
I've finally got the list attached.  The lines from my Excel spreadsheet didn't show so it's not in the most readable format.  I'm still trying to figure out a better way to post this but I figured most people would rather see a less perfect list sooner than a perfectly displayed list later.  You'll notice I've extended the deadline for orders to Monday.

Seed Exchange 481 is now open for orders until August 29 at 5pm PDT. You must be a paid up PBS member to order seed. Non-members may not order seed. Members in arrears for past SX/BX may not order seed.  I check.
This list includes seed from Mauro Peixoto's Brazil Plants.  Most of this seed is in very short supply, in many cases I was only able to divide the seed into two or three packets.  Normally I randomize orders and fill the entire order when I come to it in my stack.  For this SX I will still randomize the orders but I will only fill the top two requests of each order before going on to the next order.  After filling everyone's top two requests I will then go back through the orders and fill the rest of the requests.  This gives more people a chance to get some of the rarer seed and prevents the top few from getting it all.
A couple of other notes.  I got Hymenocallis occidentalis seed today.  It is listed at the bottom because the labels were already printed.  Also some of you have sent me seed of hardy bulbs.  This seed will be offered in October in time for fall planting.  So do not worry.  I have it and will offer it.
Any order submitted by the deadline has an equal chance of being filled first. All orders should be submitted to seedyjan1@gmail.com with "SX 481" in the subject line.  Do not post your orders to the list!
Most of the seed packets are now labeled alphabetically with name, item number and SX number. The labels do not include additional information such as color, parents etc.  You'll need to transfer that information from the list.  Donor information is also available from the list.  In most cases the list now includes the number of packets available and if seed is available to make additional packets.
Rules for ordering
Your name, address, and email should be listed first on your order.  Give your address just like you would on an envelope. Don't string it across a line; I can't tell what goes on what line. This is particularly important for foreign addresses.
For example:
Sue Bulbcrazy
2654 Bulbnut Ln
Bulbnutsville, OR 92013
suebulbcrazy@ggmail.com
Seed is $2 per packet.  Your bill will reflect postage credit for any previous SX submissions.  Domestic postage will be charged at $4 per order.  All previous orders shipped for $4.30 to $4.90 per packet so I am standardizing postage at $4 per packet for all domestic orders.  The extra over the postage costs will help pay for the mailing envelopes. Foreign orders will be charged at cost.  You will receive a bill in your envelope which you can pay online at https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbsforum/index.php?page=membership
List your 15 first choices vertically in numeric order. For example:
13 Narcissus bulbocodium
14 Narcissus cantabricus
15 Romulea rosea
Be sure to include both number and name.
I am not limiting people to 15 packets but if you want extras I will process the amount in excess of 15 packets after I am done filling the other orders.
No seed orders from countries that require a phytosanitary certificate. New Zealand orders are at your own risk for postage costs.  As best I can tell my last order to New Zealand did not get through.
It is important to follow the ordering rules.  Orders that don't, and drive me crazy trying to fill them, may be put at the bottom of the stack!  Don't make me do that.
Contact me with any questions about the SX procedure, but not about the offerings, at seedyjan1@gmail.com.  Questions about germination or the suitability of the seed for your climate should be posted on the forum.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / SX 481 now closed

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / Pop Up Crinum SX
August 11, 2022, 08:31:07 PM
The SX recently received some fresh crinum (Crinum bulbispermum) seed from Cynthia W Mueller.  This seed has very short viability and tonight I found that some of the germinating radicles did not look good so I need to get this seed out pronto.  Cynthia describes the seed as "my best Cr. Macowani crosses".  She sent me a couple of pictures which I will post on the forum when I'm done with this email.

These seeds are available first come, first served.  I don't know how many requests I will get but everyone will receive at least three seeds.  Depending on the number of requests you may get a lot more.  When I'm out of seed the exchange is done.

Please send me your requests.  Make sure you include your mailing address.  It's really hard to send seed over the internet!

Off to post the pictures on the forum.

Hi Judy,
Jane just notified me of your post.  I confess I'm bad about checking the forum regularly so didn't know of your question. In the future you'll get a quicker reply if you just email me directly at Seedyjan1@gmail.com.

Regarding the mirabilis seed.  I don't know if there is any interest of not. Why don't you send me five packets worth of each and we'll see.  The biggest interest is in seed that is not available commercially.  Mirabilis is available commercially but you do have to poke around a bit to find.

The US seed exchange is now open for donations until October 1. I'm particularly encouraging you to send in seed of hardy bulbs.  I want to have a seed exchange in September or October emphasizing hardy bulb seed so it can be planted in time for a winter chill.  Please read ALL the instructions carefully and contact me at seedyjan1@gmail.com if you have any questions.

The seed exchange welcomes all non-ephemeral geophyte seed, but not in unlimited quantities.  I only need enough seed for a maximum of ten packets unless the seed is unusually desirable.  For most seed a tablespoon is quite sufficient for ten packets.  If your seed is huge (pea size or bigger), it would be appropriate to send a bit more.

Wild collected seed, with geographic collection information, is very welcome. Wild collected see must collected in accordance with local laws and applicable regulations.

Please label each bag with the precise name of the plant (scientific name if possible) and your own name so that all donations are clearly identified and can be referred to the donor. I can accept as few as five seeds.  Some lucky person will love to have that single packet. Include your email with your order in case I have questions.

If you are willing to prepack seed please let me know how many free seed envelopes to send you.  Be sure to include your mailing address. If you wish to use your own envelopes they must be no wider than 2" otherwise they won't fit in my seed trays.  I buy our seed packets from NARGS https://www.nargs.org/glassine-envelopes.  Prepacking the seed will greatly reduce my workload.  Each envelope should have at least enough seed for a pot, generally at least 10 seeds. Rare seed can have less. If you're unsure how many seeds to packet just send me the seed and I'll pack it.  If you think your seed will be especially desirable and you have extra seed you can send it in a separate envelop and I will pack it as needed.

No ephemeral seed.  This means no crinum, clivia and hymenocallis seed or any other moist seed likely to produce a radicle before it can be distributed.  I have received germinating seed of all these genera. It's difficult to protect the radicle in the seed distribution and mailing process.  If you have ephemeral seed you can distribute it one of two ways.  1) Ask people to contact you directly for seed, mail it yourself and ask for postage reimbursement. 2) it yourself Grow it on for a year or so and then put the baby bulbs in the bulb exchange.  Bulbs are much more durable than germinating seed.

No one is required to prepackage seed.  I realize not everyone has the time, finger dexterity or inclination to package seed.  Jane and I have time to package seed.  Please however make sure your seed is clean.  Nobody likes dirty seed.

If you wish to donate seed from outside the US please let me know.  I have a Small Lots of Seed Permit I can send you for your donation.  This form is required for all seed entering the US from foreign countries.

As a donor you will get a rounded credit on seed equaling the postage you paid for your donation.  For example a postage cost of $4.49 will be rounded to $4 and a postage cost of $4.50 will be rounded to $5.

Please remember that you must be a fully paid member of the PBS to order from our seed and bulb exchanges. You do not have to be a donor to order, all US and non-EU members can order from the US seed exchange.  EU members have a separate seed exchange due to the requirement for a phytosanitary certificate for entry into the EU.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / Re: SX 480 is open
June 12, 2022, 08:06:06 PM
Seed Exchange 480 is now closed.  All the orders will go out in the mail tomorrow.

Some observations from order filling.

Clivias were very popular and went fast.  I didn't have many seeds so a lot of you will unfortunately be disappointed.  Moraeas were also popular and I sold out of most species.  Many people requested calochortus but luckily I had lots of seed of most species so was able to fulfill most requests. Lilies were not popular; perhaps lily lovers are already members of the North American Lily Society and are getting their seed there?. I was surprised most people did not order a full allotment of fifteen packets. I'm used to the NARGS seed exchange where most everyone orders all the seeds they can get. So you are a selective bunch I still have left over seed and will probably organize some grab bags in the near future.

Some of you have trouble following directions.  I asked for addresses at the top of the seed requests and often found them at the bottom.  I want the addresses at the top because it makes addressing and printing the postage stickers easier for me.  When you're processing forty five orders you need all the efficiencies you can get.  Please, please put your address at the top.  Next time people who don't follow instructions may find their orders are filled last!

Your orders have an invoice enclosed with the amount owed.  When you pay it's important to note on PayPal or on your check that you are paying for Seed Exchange 480.  Do not confuse or combine payments with bulb exchanges.  Our treasurer Arnold has been given a list of what everyone owes and matches payments with invoices.  It's important to pay your invoices promptly because you won't be allowed to participate in future seed and bulb exchanges if you're not paid up.  I've been notified that I have seed coming from Brazil Plants so I'll be running an exchange for this seed in the near future.

Enjoy your seed when it arrives.

Happy growing,

Jan Jeddeloh

Canadians can't participate in the bulb exchanges but they can participate in the seed exchanges.  You unfortunately just get to pay exorbitant international shipping rates even thought you're a lot closer to me in Portland than Arnold in New Jersey.

General Off-Topic / Re: How queer are we?
May 26, 2022, 09:46:02 PM
Straight woman here.  It's always been my experience the horticultural world doesn't give a damn who you sleep or live with as long as you want to talk plants. I don't know what we'd do with out "gays". I live in Portland, Oregon which is a pretty gay  etc friendly place.  Go out into the boondocks of coastal, eastern or southern Oregon it is probably different.  Those areas are full of gun-toting Trumpies.
